30th June

We got to our next stop at Parthenay nice and early and soon found the aire. This looked really nice - right by a beautiful lake and with electricity for only 6 euros a night. There was only one small problem - there was no-one else there. To most people this would not be a problem but Lynda doesn't like to stay anywhere that there are not other motorhomers about. In the end we (she) decided that we would stay instead on the campsite right next door.

Luckily Camping du Bois Vert is in the ACSI book so we could stay the night for 14 euros plus another 4 euros for internet. Its actually a very nice site - lots of trees and hedges and very quiet. As it was a nice sunny day Lynda managed to do some sunbathing which made her happy.

We spoke to the British couple on the pitch opposite (loads of Brits here) who said the main town of Parthenay is about 3km away and we might need our bikes to get there. In the end it was a choice between sitting in the sunshine sipping wine or a hot bike ride into town - no contest!

Even more good news for Lynda was that they have a bar which sells cocktails! In the evening we strolled over there and ordered a pina colada (sorry for the spelling!) for her and my usual beer. As you can see from the photos we sat outside in the evening sunshine, very pleasant. We couldn't help noticing that they serve some tasty looking snacks here too so we were soon ordering something along with another round of drinks.

Plan A was to have a hot dog each and a large serving of fries to share. The young girl serving us indicated that they didn't have hot dogs but would we like the next item down on the menu. I had no idea what this actually was but it seemed like a good idea at the time.

A few minutes later we were served with our snack which was two spicy sausages in a baguette with salad. Alarm bells started ringing because there was already quite a large serving of chips on our plates - surely they were not going to bring us more? Of course you can guess what happened - a large bowlful of chips arrived! We did our best to eat everthing but even Lynda can only eat so many chips. Altogether a very pleasant evening though. Two cocktails, two beers and all the food came to about 31 euros - quite good value I think.

If you are the regular reader of this blog you will recall my slight reluctance to make full use of the unisex shower / toilet facilities they have on sites. Lynda had told me they have the same regime here so after a good nights sleep I resolved to get up reasonably early and go over to get showered before all and sundry appeared. In the event I was okay, some of the other showers were in use but I didn't actually see anyone so my blushes were spared.

Nice big pitch surrounded by greenery

Very nice patio outside the bar / cafe

Nice swimming pool, Lynda never got to use it. I don't
swim of course!

Will she be able to walk back to the van after 2 of those?

  2. Why not use Ruby's fine shower facilities instead of the communal? James.
