23rd July 2012

Yesterday started off okay, we got away from Autun early. We (or rather, I) drove a lot of miles yesterday going to campsites that had closed down and aires that had no wifi available. There were so many I have forgotten where we went now.

All turned out well in the end because we headed for an aire at Dijon Talant. In the book it looks pretty scruffy actually but its next to a campsite so we thought wifi might be available. We were soon at the aire, having negotiated the 3 metre headroom available under the bridge by the aire entrance with a 3 metre tall motorhome.

We think the aire must have been renovated since the book was printed because far from being scruffy it is very smart, newly resurfaced and with large individual pitches. There is electricity for everyone and best of all - free wifi!

The slight downside is that we have to pay 10 euros per night but you get what you pay for the old saying goes so were were happy to shell out for 2 nights.

Once rested from all the driving yesterday we just sat and enjoyed the sunshine then had a good nights sleep. I told you this aire is called Dijon Talant, obviously near the city of Dijon but we didn't realise how near. Lynda asked at reception and they told her its just a 20 minute walk into the city alongside the canal. They were not wrong. First thing this morning we set off to explore. We are used to many shops being closed on a monday but we thought that as this is a decent size city they might make an effort. Alas no. Most of the shops we saw were closed, probably saved me some money anyway.

Dijon is a very pleasant city, we remember some parts of it from when we were here, just passing through, about 7 years ago. There were not many people about and very little traffic, all seems a bit odd compared to what we are used to but its just the French way.

We got a map from the tourist office then proceeded to get slightly lost, only being rescued by a passing party of British people who had also been struggling but had asked a kindly native for directions.

Lynda was keen to get to the railway station, hoping to find an English magazine she wanted. No mags in English just yesterday's Express or Mail on offer at 3.80 euros each.

Vaguely heading in the right direction back to the aire be had a look round a lovely park / garden. The French certainly know how to grow flowers.

Soon back at Ruby we have spent the rest of the day relaxing, eating and drinking. Only a couple of vans left on the aire now.

One of many interesting roundabout displays we have seen
- this one seemed especially apt.

Nice walk along the canal by the aire

This is only 20 minutes walk from the city centre

Nice new aire next to a campsite

One  of Dijon's cathedrals

Not many hatshops around these days - closed of course

Its so rare to see a UK business name we had to get a photo

They seem to be laying new tram tracks in the city, this was
a new tram being tested

We stayed at this hotel last
time we were in Dijon

Lynda made me have a go on several of these torture machines

Beautiful gardens

Just been for a walk up to the large lake nearby (10 minutes away). Lovely artificial beach and stuff for the kids to play on. Talking of kids.....
